I think that Geillis was able to go back further in time because she used blood + fire to travel. It says in Outlander when Claire met Geillie that she thought she was "a few years older than myself," (page 162, mass market paperback) and Ishmael does say that Geillis no longer bleeds, so she wouldn't have been able to conceive.
As far as Brianna though, Geillie's actions seemed very sinister. I got the impression she wanted to hurt Brianna.
