Interesting questions about the parenting styles. It sounds like even as a small child, while her father was there, Beryl fended for herself quite a bit and had the run of the farm and then some. Can you imagine any modern parents allowing their child to go off on a boar hunt? I thought often of Ale...

Demetria, I agree about the issues this book raises about colonialism, treatment of native population, etc -- although for her time, her attitudes were probably fairly progressive. Certainly when it came to women's roles, as she seems very intent on breaking through gender barriers. I hope to read P...

I do find myself wondering why Jane and Fanny were back with the army (with Jane working as a prostitute) and in Savannah rather than staying in the village where Rachel brought them after the battle or heading to NY. I thought we had gotten some explanation, but it wasn't here, so maybe it's comin...

Great summary, Vala! This is a long and complicated chapter. About Richardson -- well, I don't take anything he says at face value. If he's "confessing" his plans to Claire, then there must be more to the story than what he's saying. He's still trying to manipulate, and I think he still ha...

It's so hard to choose! I love the scene of John and Percy delivering a baby in the church in Brotherhood of the Blade. (Do I have the book right? Pretty sure it's BotB).

Well, and I also love every time John calls Claire "my dear".

Has anyone else been watching Thirteen Reasons Why on Netflix? I read the book years ago, and thought it was quite powerful, but the TV series is just incredible. Very intense, and sometimes hard to watch -- I watched it with my son, a high school freshman, and I'm glad we watched it together. We ha...
