I think we should start a thread for each book! That would keep me (and those of us farther ahead) from spilling the beans accidentally!

NE, I love the idea too! I am on the 3rd book and some are just starting on are on the 4th or 5th. That would avoid spoilers. Great idea.

I have a question: Is this series appropriate reading for a 13 (well, almost 14) year old boy? He is an avid reader and reads above his age, but I don't know about the content of this series. He has heard that it's good and expressed interest, but I need to decide whether I will let him read it now or not.

Thanks in advance for input.

abl, I sort of think it depends but probably not. There is lots of underage sex, lots of prostitution, pretty harsh language and graphic violence. One of the main characters gets sold to wed at 13 and consummates her marriage at that age. I would say the sex isn't necessarily any more graphic that OL. You would really need to decide based on the maturity level.

LR, what are your thoughts?

ABL, I'm not really sure. When I was his age, I read books that contained sex and I'm not mentally (or morally, I don't think) scarred. But this book has a lot of violence and a lot of personal politics, that might be beyond a 13 year olds understand. He might read and enjoy the aspects of fantasy or even war, but the nuances would likely be lost on someone so young.

I think that you should read the books first. If you think he could understand and enjoy them, or that you could discuss the books with him, then go for it. There are a lot of teachable moments in these books and the characters are very compelling.

Can't say I was every that compelled by the food, except for maybe all the honey and figs Dani gets to eat.

Reinvigorating this thread :) Just thought this would be the place to say "I'm in!" I've been debating beginning Song of Fire and Ice for some time now....I have been a reader of fantasy for years, but mentioned in another thread that I've abandoned several other series because they became repetitive or
dragged out past my attention span. But so many of you have spoken well of these books (and I've noticed how many other books we have in common) that I've taken the plunge! I look forward to joining the threads on these...and thanks for the input. One more reason to love this community of readers!
