ABL, I bow to you loving A Tale of Two Cities. I struggle with almost anything Dickens.

Not a novel, but I love reading Shakespeare.

Honestly, I have struggled with some Dickens, but not Tale of Two Cities. I read it in junior high and was shocked by how much I liked it. And, then I listened to it again a few years ago and loved it all over. I would not say all of Dickens is my thing, though. I liked David Copperfield (though not as much as Tale), but I didn't much like Oliver Twist and Great Expectations was OK even though I've heard others love that one. Oh, well. To each her own. But, if you haven't tried ToTC and only other Dickens, you might want to give that a try. I found it much better than any other Dickens I've read (or listened to).

I'm a sucker for Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. I also love North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. Kate Chopin's The Awakening is one of my very favorites, as is Little Dorrit. I also like American mid-century social novels, Invisible Man A Tree Grows in Brooklyn are my two favorites. I love Kurt Vonnegut, though I'm not sure he is classic. But Cat's Cradle really resonates with me. In high school, I read The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged over and over. Not my favorites any more, but I still feel the same exhilaration when I dig into a good book.

I've still only read 3 of Austen's books - pride and prejudice, Emma and Mansfield Park.... loved them all, so I really should get around to reading her other books... I really want to treat myself and buy a nice Jane Austen Box-Set... but since I own all her books (although none of them match and most are from second hand shops) I can't quite justify it at the moment :( .... one day!

ABL, I've never listened to Dickens. I will have to try that. I have read Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations and, of course, A Christmas Carol.

A Christmas Carol is a good listen too! :-) I have the Patrick Stewart version (a Christmas gift from hubby last year) and I listened to a different version earlier.

I've just re-read The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran... it's such a fantastic little book... it's very short, only takes about an hour to read, so if you haven't read it, you should definitely think about putting it on your TBR!
