Introducing May's Book of the Month - Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay From the BookParis, July 1942. Sarah, a ten year old girl, is taken with her parents by the French police as they go door to door arresting Jewish families in the middle of the night. Desperate to protect her younger brother, Sarah locks him in a bedroom cupboard- their secret hiding place -and promises to come back for him as soon as they are released. Sixty years later. Sarah's story intertwines with that of Julia Jarmond,a journalist investigating the round-up. Sarah's Key is an emotionally gripping story of two families, forever linked to, and haunted by one of the darkest days in France's past. Wait! This is coming out as a film too? I'm so clueless. I read this for my January RL book club and really enjoyed it. It was heartbreaking, but a great read.

I read this last year but it was one of those stories that stays with you for a while afterwards. Julia was a person that I could identify with immediately and loved her daughter's spunk. There was a point where I actually felt sorry for her husband (a very short point) when he said that she made no time for him in their lives because throughout the beginning of Julia's story she always seemed to be with friends or her daughter and the story was from her point of view. But then he ditched her at the abortion clinic and there went that sympathy. I remember saying, "don't do it" "don't do it" and then when she finally tells him that she didn't go through with it and he left her, it was Good Riddance. There were so many secrets with all of the characters that you had to wonder how any of them could have relationships with one another. Poor Sarah. I was hoping that her son and Julia would get together at some point.
I don't know if I could watch this as a movie. Parts of it are so sad and depressing.

I know what you mean, Pauline. This was a heartbreaking book, but I felt some good does come out of everything at the end when Julia and Sarah's son meet in NYC. They had come full circle in their lives and finally found some peace. It was tragic that Sarah committed suicide, but the one solace was that she left behind a legacy. I should have been prepared for the baby's name at the end, but was caught by surprise just the same and cried along with Julia and William. I found that scene especially tender.
BTW, I thought of OL immediately when Julia mentions the lingering smell of L'Heure Bleue in her husband's car.
