This month's BOOK OF THE MONTH selection is PANDAEMONIUM by Christopher Brookmyre. Diana gave it a rave review on her blog. Unfortunately, PANDAEMONIUM is not readily available in the US, although you may be able to order a copy from The Poisoned Pen. As we here at OUTLANDER BOOK CLUB are never daunted in our attempts to read a Really Good Book, we suggest you pick one of Mr. Brookmyre's other titles, which are available through amazon.com or your local library (my intra-state system lists several titles). I ordered ATTACK OF THE UNSINKABLE RUBBER DUCKS, which has a supernatural element to it. Mr. Brookmyre's website is HERE.

I ordered a book through the local library. The Country of the Blind. I would love to read the Pandemonium one though. He has a cool web site. Check it out. http://www.brookmyre.co.uk/

Well, they ended up sending me one fine day in the middle of the night. It's due back May 6th. I'm not sure how I ended up with that one as I'd ordered the other title. I just read the first page and I liked it..."So many books, so little time." Being stuck in the Outlander loop doesn't help either. Oh well.

Ok - well my thoughts on Pandaemonium.
Initially, it's not the easiest book in the world to read, it's quite complex and a little bit chaotic, but then that fits in well with the title, as the definition of pandemonium, is in fact = a place or scene of riotous uproar or utter chaos. Following a violent incident at school, a group of senior pupils are taken to a retreat, in order to come to terms with what happened to one of their classmates. In an underground bunker not far from the retreat, lies a secret which, when discovered, will unleash the fury of hell. Not for the faint hearted and although classed as gothic horror, it is as far removed from something like Twilight as is possible to be, the only common denominater being teenagers. As I read it I was reminded more than once of John Milton's Paradise Lost!!
If you've never read anything by Brookmyre before ,you may not warm to his style of writing. He is irreverent, often controversial, deeply satirical, but undeniably a very competent writer.
