Welcome to our Book of the Month selection for June 2010 The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows
It's 1946 and author Juliet Ashton can't think what to write next. Out of the blue, she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey - by chance, he's acquired a book that once belonged to her - and, spurred on by their mutual love of reading, they begin a correspondence. When Dawsey reveals that he is a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, her curiosity is piqued and it's not long before she begins to hear from other members. As letters fly back and forth with stories of life in Guernsey under the German Occupation, Juliet soon realizes that the society is every bit as extraordinary as its name. This book became a great success following its publication in 2008. Sadly, the author Mary Ann Shaffer did not live to see her book become so successful. She died in February 2008, her neice Annie Barrows completed the book. In the UK it is adored by book/ reading groups, and is affectionately know as "The Guernsey Spud Book " Follow this link to discover more about the island. GuernseyHope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.The book will be open for discussion in the discussion section from the 23 June. Happy Reading

I really enjoyed this book too, but I listened to it. There were five different narrators, so each letter writer had a different voice, different personality. It was very well done. Now I have added Guernsey to the very long list of place I'd like to travel to someday. Have you been to Guernsey, Sassenach?

I picked up my copy today but I'm 2/3 through Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol and have to finish it. But, I'm not working tomorrow so I can stay up late tonite. Hopefully, this book discussion doesn't start for a couple of weeks so that I can give you my .02 on it.

I just started it and it's great. I really like this writing style. It reminds me of that book, Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern. If you haven't read it, it is hilarious, and a great summer read. You figure out the story by reading their letters back and forth which start out as notes passed from first grade. It's a cutie.
I'll be away when you start the discussion so I'll jump in late.
