Has anyone read this series? What are your thoughts? My cousin's wife is obsessed with them (as much as we are with OL) and so I picked up the first book. I've only read the prologue but I'm so lost.

I love WoT but I will warn you, you are in for a haul. It has been rather exciting lately since the second to the last book came out last week. Things are really winding up for a big climax.
There are several books that are just for set up purposes and nothing really happens. The prologue of EOTW just sets up the background of the story. Get through it, into about chapter 3, and it will get going.
good online forums and sources of info are dragonmount.com and tarvalon.net. If you have any questions, PM me or post here and I'll try to help you out.

well at least if you get into it, you'll have something to keep you occupied until book 8 comes out and you'll have plenty of mysteries from RJ to bang your head over as well....

My co-worker is obsessed with this series and reads them over and over. I have the first book, but may not get to it for awhile.

My husband and FIL are so out of their minds about this series. Whenever he teases me about OL, I just start chanting "Wheel of Time, Wheel of Time"

I'm also a WoT fan. They are sort of like Outlander is that they are lengthy tomes and get in great detail that can sometimes make my eyes glaze over, but I love them. Nynaeve and Mat are my favorite characters.

My uncle and cousin are HUGE WoT fans. They got my mother and I to read the series many years ago. I only got to book 10. At that time, Jordan was still alive and had just completed book 11. However, I couldn't get into book 10 and set the whole series down. Now that so much time has passed, I'm worried I can't pick it back up again.
Here are my thoughts on WoT. It is wonderfully thought out and detailed—maybe too detailed. It is very very complicated with a lot of characters and it can get confusing. I recently started reading Game of Thrones and it kind of reminded me of the WoT series with the number of characters, but WoT is worse. So, if you are good at keeping all of that stuff together in your head, you will really enjoy this series. If not, then it will confuse you to no end.
The other aspect of this book that really bothered me was the idea of multiple wives. I didn't care for this and I like books where there is a one man for one woman who are made for each other theme (like our beloved Jamie and Claire).
These books are very entertaining and well written for the right kind of person. Go give them a try. I liked them and enjoyed them, but didn't love them.
Webgirl, I agree, Mat is one of the best characters.

I didn't like the stupid three mates for Rand. It makes no sense for him to be in love with Avhienda (sp?) or Elayne. He's barely spent any time with them. We're supposed to believe they love each other just because we are told to believe it. It only makes sense for him to be in love with Min. I'm not into the polygamy thing or polyamory. I tolerate it with Lizzie in Outlander because I think it's more for comic relief than anything else.

I started reading this series a few months ago, but was in the middle of a big move and could not give it the focus needed to get into the story. I'm going to try again! So many of my friends are fanatic about these books. They also have high praise for Brandon Sanderson who finished the series out after Robert Jordan's death. Brandon has his own novels and I'll try those too.

I really did get drawn into the last two books. I thought I'd lost interest, but got sucked back in. Sanderson has, apparently, done well by RJ.
