On my Outlander hiatus, I also discovered The Winter Sea...read it in December. I've also discovered Anya Seton I read Avalon and like it. I've heard that it's not her best work, so I'll read her more popular books).
I'm glad to read that Susanna Kearsley has more good books to read. I'll dive into more after I'm done with Catherine the Great.

I love Susanna's style. I read all her books, except the last (that came out at the end of last year) which I'm about to start reading it tonight.
She has such a beautiful style, the story flows so nicely, and most importantly she builds great character effortless. The details, the descriptions, of the main characters are usually sparse but make me feel them so alive and capable to carry the reader through the webs of the stories.

I remember reading Pillars of the Earth, and the World without end,(huge books) without feeling, or carrying, much for any of the main characters. The talk about them was plenty.

Out of the topic of this thread; I just wanted to mention here a writer that I discovered recently, her name is Tamera Alexander.
I read only a book so far From a Distance, which is the first in a series of three books...and she has another series. I'll be busy reading her books.... Hopefully I wont be disappointed.

A short description from Amazon for "From a Distance"

Determined to become one of the country's premier newspaper photographers, Elizabeth Westbrook travels to the Colorado Territory to capture the grandeur of the mountains surrounding the remote town of Timber Ridge. She hopes, too, that the cool, dry air of Colorado, and its renowned hot springs, will cure the mysterious illness that threatens her career, and her life.

Daniel Ranslett, a former Confederate sharpshooter, is a man shackled by his past, and he'll do anything to protect his land, and his solitude. When an outspoken Yankee photographer captures an image that appears key to solving a murder, putting herself in danger, Daniel is called upon to repay a debt. He's a man of his word, but repaying that debt could bring secrets from his past to light.

I recently got a sample of Rose Garden and Winter Sea on my Kindle. It sounds like you all enjoyed reading both of these books. They are on my list, but I have much to do before I get to them. Thanks for the information! :flower:

I've heard of Alexander, but haven't read her stuff yet. I'll have to check into her. Francine Rivers is another who can pull you in with total emotion. She's not afraid of writing about the ugly side of things, but it's to help you understand the characters better.

Amazon just reduced the Kindle price for The Rose Garden. It's now $2.24. Great price for a great book!

I am a bit confused and I am am hoping someone can shed some light. At the end of Rose Garden there is an excerpt From the next novel at is to come out April 2012. Marianna. Okay I just found a book called Marianna by Kearnsly that was published a couple of years ago. Is there a new book coming out? What is the name? Did she rewrite the original book? Am I completely crazy?

Janet you are not crazy...Marianna has been out for several years . It looks like it has been reissued with new cover which is different from the 2010 version. As far as I am aware she doesn't have new books out this year.

Yup, I was confused too! Very pretty new cover being released this month, I guess to match the cover styles for The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden. I have a beat-up old copy from a few years ago -- is it shallow to want the new version because it will look better on my shelf??

In any case, despite the new cover, it is the same book, originally published in 1993, I believe (it won an award that year, according to the author's website), and has since been reissued a few times.

Has anyone read Mariana? I haven't yet, but it's on my to-read pile.

I read Marianna this past week end. I like the book but I do not think that it was as good as Rose Garden and Winter Sea. The characters are not as developed and the end comes fast and is not so supported. Good read.
