FWIW, it did not scare me silly. There were certainly some disturbing things, but nothing that was creepy enough to keep me up at night.

I do love Stephen King but I get frustrated with most of his books because it seems like he adds a lot of details for the sake of details. I sometimes wonder if he is getting paid by the word. I realize it's important to flesh out characters and situations but sometimes it's like, I get it. Like in "Under the Dome", I was like, OKAY, I get that xxxxxxx is a bad guy, please move the heck on!

But I do love "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" and his short story compilations. "Different Seasons" is my favorite because it has The Shawshank Redemption, The Body (book version of Stand By Me) and Apt Pupil as well as The Breathing Method which is amazing! And even though it is hella long and I just said I don't like the length qua length, I have read "IT" every summer since I was 13. I'm on my fourth copy! Scary story but also a very poignant tale of growing up and leaving childhood behind.

bonnielass - My husband felt exactly the same way about it being overly detailed and repetitious. He thought it could have been much shorter. And, undoubtedly that's true, but I found it a good listen, so it didn't bother me as much as it clearly bothered him.

Different Seasons is an amazing compilation of stories. I still remember, in detail, and can feel the horror (even though it isn't a horror story) of Apt Pupil. I read it over 25 years ago in high school. I am in the library now; maybe I'll go pick it up (as if I need to add more to my "to read" pile).

I read Under THe Dome last month, and just couldn't put it down. I thought he did an amazing job of turning this one small town in Maine into an entire universe. Most of the creepiness in the book comes from human cruelty, not anything supernatural. His imagination just dazzles me.

This is the first SK I've read in a good long time, although I just picked up the Dark Tower series at a used book sale and plan to start soon. Meanwhile, his newest book, 11/22/63, comes out tomorrow (!!) and deals with TIME TRAVEL (!!!), one of my favorite fictional topics, so I can't wait.

I ended up LOVING 11/22/63. As a friend of mine said to me about this book, "It was 800 pages, but I could have read 800 more." Amazing plot. I went into it thinking it would be very straightforward -- time travel, change the past -- all about the Kennedy assassination. I was surprised by how incredibly moving the personal relationships were in this book; I had no idea that it would be the love story in this book that would create the biggest impact for me. Highly recommended!

“Sassenach." He had called me that from the first; the Gaelic word for outlander, a stranger. An Englishman. First in jest, then in affection.”

I used to read everything he wrote but in recent years I have sort of branched out. Sometimes he gets a little "far out" for me. My absolute favorite book by him is "The Stand," and just recently I read 11/22/63 about the Kennedy Assassination. I like strange, unusual happenings but not monsters so the time travel in 11/22 was neat and I am still hooked on anything to do with the Kennedy thing. For some reason I could not get into the Dark Tower series but that is just me.

I was just wondering if anyone reads Stephen King? His Dark Tower Series is incredible. Anyone ever read that? I read it about 6 months before I started reading Outlander. I do highly recommend it!

I finally started the Dark Tower series last week while on vacation, and I'm now on book 3. Cannot stop reading!
