I picked up a copy of Insurrection by Robyn Young, which is a story of the Scottish King Robert the Bruce...it's just published, and it's book one in a trilogy

Fantastic Fiction

For light and fluffy reading...anything by Janet Evanovitch. Always fun, funny, and a hint or two of sexy.

I'm so excited - I've just managed to get a copy of "Into the Wilderness" by Sara Donati

I am about the start the second to the last book in the Outlander Series and am already starting to panic about the loss I will feel when the books are over. I as just wondering if anyone knew of any other author who writes long, historical, meaty series with Scotland as a back drop? After reading Diana Gabaldon's books I know it is going to be hard to match, but I am looking for any author or authors who might fill her shoes until she comes up with more to read.

Thanks!

I don't have any suggestions for other authors, and hopefully someone else will be able to give you some suggestions. I fulfilled my fix by picking up Outlander, the day after I finished Echo. I'm also listening to Outlander CDs. I was wondering, though, if you would be interested in the Lord John books?

You might want to read Sara Donati's wilderness series. The setting is the American Colonies in the 18th century and going forward into the early 19th. It is an epic series following one family and their descendants and I really loved it. It helped me with my Outlander "withdrawal" and really I enjoyed it just simply because it was good. Jamie, Claire and Ian make a "cameo" appearance in the first book. There are 6 books in the series I believe.

I too would suggest Sara Donati's books, altho they are set in America not Scotland.
For me they were good but not great. I don't think she is anywhere near the writer that Herself is, but the story is a good one, and Donati becomes a better writer as the series moves on.

Two other series I would recommend if you're ok with graphic sex is The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J. R. Ward, and the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. They are both in the paranormal genre.

Just discovered that Karen Marie Moning also has a Highlander Series. I have only read the first and enjoyed it but it is really nothing on the scale of the OL books.

I don't know if these books have been mentioned yet but "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End" by Ken Follett. They are big wonderful thick books that are to be read one after the other I loved them!

Nancy - I agree. I loved both PotE and WWE. Although, I didn't read them back to back. I think it was closer to a year apart.

I highly recommend the trilogy The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons. It is a great story.

Hi all. Got to wade in here. I have read the Into the Wilderness series. I enjoyed it very much. I certainly learned a lot about America in the early 1800's. I also love J.R. Ward's novels. Black Dagger Brotherhood, and her new Fallen Angel series are really fun. I also read Monica Macarty. BUT....The Lymond Chronicles and The House of Niccoli are amazing series. Francis Crawford of Lymond is one of the most complex and brilliant characters I have ever read. I'm on the third of eight in the Niccoli series, and Nicholas is proving to be every bit as complex as Lymond. If you like books with a challenge, try these.

Hi everyone! I didnt read all the post in here so sorry if some of these books have been mentioned. My mom and dad are avid readers and when I started reading they keep harrassing me to read these books, they were not really what I liked but I gave in and read them and since then I love historical novels Clan of the Cave bear, Valley of horses and The mammoth humters theres 2 more in that series but they just didnt have enough juice in them the 6 one comes out this month on the 29 I was sure that I was going to read it the day it came out but I'm just starting book 5 from this series so I guess that will wait. I actually found the Outlander series from another board I get on ECfans which I have made alot of friends and have found alot of great books.

Sue Harrison:Trilogy
Mother earth father sky
My sister the the moon
Brother wind (prehistoric Alaska great books)

Mary Mackey: Trilogy
The year the hores came
The horses at the gate
Fires of Springs (I loved thiese book the thrid wasnt so great but the first 2 were)

James Alexander Thom: the story of Mary Ingles
Follow the river

Mirgan Llywelyn:
Red Branch

Mary Mackey:
The last warrior queen

Wilbur Smith:
Birds of Prey
Monsoon
Blue horizon (these 3 books were soooo gooood I could not put them down)
theres more to this series its about the Courtney Family all together I think theres 13 books I read the first 5 which were reallly good but the 6 one got so boring I couldnt finish it but you can read the first 3 and you'll be good cause the 4th one skips like 150 to 200 years I highy recommend all these books but mostly these 3.

I love Ken Follet
Lie down with Lions
A place called freedom
Jackdaws & A dangerous fortune.

Hope you guys will enjoy them has much as me!!
