Here's a link to some books recently recommended by "herself"

Anyone read any of them ?

Do you think any of them would fit in with our BOTM reads ?

sassenach, interesting that you should mention Diana's recommendations. Do you ever use a handy-dandy reference guide on fiction (HB, PB, Audio, Kindle) and authors called Fantastic Fiction? If not, each author's books are listed by year of release with a brief synopsis of each. This site was recommended by some book store folks, and I use it constantly. Also, one of the features on each author's page is the recommendation list. I've looked at Diana's several times, and I've wondered whether she wrote the quoted blurbs under each book mentioned. When you have a chance, please check it out - would love to have your opinion. Fantastic Fiction - it's a terrific site for quick look-ups! :D

Here are the short listed books for 2010..

Image

Follow the links for summaries of each book..

Parrot and Olivier in America Peter Carey

Room Emma Donoghue

In a Strange Room Damon Galgut

The Finkler Question Howard Jacobson

The Long Song Andrea Levy

C Tom McCarthy

I'll post the winner when I hear it announced...

:read: The book that's been getting the most favourable reviews from book groups in the UK, is ROOM by Emma Donoghue but that doesn't mean it will take the prize. I've yet to get my hands on a copy....but I have read and enjoyed The Long Song - the book cover is simply delicious and the book is good too...

AND THE WINNER IS ....

***THE FINKLER QUESTION BY HOWARD JACOBSON***

Book Details Here

And Prize Details Here

I saw Howard Jacobson interviewed on TV this morning and he looked really surprised to have won such a prestigious award for his book --

What do you think of book prizes - do they encourage you to expand your reading - or do you find them a turn off ?

Sassenach, thanks for the lists! I see that Vince Flynn's new book, 'American Assassin' has debuted #1 which is not a shock, to say the least. I wait breathlessly every year or so for a new novel from Flynn! If you're not familiar with him, you are not interested in political thrillers. His books are so chillingly well written that I've never been able to put one down. Flynn has intimate knowledge of his subject which is counterterrorism, and if this piques your interest at all, there is no current author who is better equipped to write in the genre than Flynn, IMO. (Only one to come close is Brad Thor).

Delta -I haven't read many political thrillers but my OH absolutely relishes Vince Flynn novels and will be waiting eagerly to get a copy of this new one - he also reads Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, which I think are similar. I will mention Brad Thor to him-thanks for the recommendation. :read:
