Hello People :Melissa:

I searched but did not find a topic on audio books alone if there is sorry. :wall:

I just started listening to audio books and I'm really enjoying it. I had tried before but I couldnt get into it I guess it depends on the narrator. Davina Porter does really well my question is does anyone know other narrators that are good? Thanks.
:D

Miss, if there is another thread, I missed it also :D Thank you for starting this thread. Audio has been discussed within other threads.

I can't answer your question about other narrators.

Not the claire and I recently finished listening/auditing OL. We are on disk 7 of DIA today. We really like Davina Porter's reading. I usually read along to understand the translation to American English. :rotfl:

We have listened to other books in the past, usually on long car trips. This is the first time we are buying the books instead of checking them out of the library. We are listening to these in the comfort of our home. I am afraid that I would drive off the road too often listening to this story!

Karen Marie Moning has been discussed on this site before. She has the Highlander and Fever series. I am reading the first Highlander, Beyond the Highland Mist. It is not written with nearly the complexity that DG writes, but it is a romance set in the Highlands. I will finish this book and then try the Fever series on e-books. My wife referred them to me as light reading. I don't know if they are available on audio.

I read the Fever series in book form, but I have heard some good things about the audio versions, at least of the later books. I think someone said there are both a female and a male reader and they love the voice for Barrons. Can't say from personal experience, though.

Davina Porter is my absolute favorite reader. I would listen to her read anything, including the phone book, I think. Jim Dale did a fantastic job on the Harry Potter books, too. Some readers who I've listened to several times are Frank Muller, George Guidall and others I can't recall. I like Jeff Woodman's readings of the Lord John books. And, although it took me a little while to get used to the southern accents, I also like Johanna Parker's readings of the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.

I'm sure there are more, but I don't remember the names right now. Most of the readings I've listened to (and there have been quite a few) have been quite good, though I like some better than others. There are only occasionally audiobooks that I found disappointing and would prefer to have read on paper.

I just realized if you go on audible.com you can sample the books and narrators. Yes repoman the Fever series is on audio thanks for the recommendation I looked at the authors reviews she has alot of good feedback.

audiobooklover do you read them before you listen? I kind of feel like I might miss something if I dont read it first. I read outlander and others before I listened to them.

I sampled a few audiobook on audible.com and discovered that listening to a male voice reading the racy bits, like, "...his firm muscled chest..." really creeped me out! :scared:

If you want to listen to audio books, I really recommend the audible.com membership. They have 5 of the Outlander books, read by Ms. Porter, and with my membership I got them for less than $15 each! You get one free book a month and a 30% discount on others. I joined over Xmas mainly to get $100 off an iPod (look for special deals like that as incentives). But, because I joined, I discovered the Outlander series, which always comes up first, as most popular, under historical romance (my favorite). :)

Alas, audible does not have Ms Porter's version of The Fiery Cross or Breath of Snow and Ashes. I bought the latter from Amazon, rather than wait for it to be available on audible (sounds like that's in the works), but I paid a pretty penny for my impatience. (There was a 2-3 month waiting list at the library.) But, The Fiery Cross is HARD to find, and I ended up renting it from the publisher (Recorded Books LLC) for $29. That sucker would have cost over $100 to buy the CDs!

So, I JUST started listening to TFC and discovered that the CDs are a terrible pain compared to listening to MP3 files on an iPod. I have to stop and change CDs, and I lose my place if I go from car to house. Ugg. I may have to burn those suckers to my computer so I can listen on my iPod. I'm only on disk 5 and there are 40 disks to go!

I would not wait to read first... Unless the audio book was abridged.

I have not read the Outlander series yet, just listened to the first 4 books. I have a 64 mile commute to work every day, so I'm surprised I JUST started listening to audio books. I'm getting SO much more done around the house too!

Miss read it - Mostly, I listen to books that I have not read so I can get through more books overall because there are just too many books and too little reading time. :read: However, there are some books (often series) that I would like the chance to read again or that I want to experience in another way - and audio can be quite a different experience from reading - that I listen to after having read them. Both the Outlander series and the Harry Potter series fit into the latter category. There are plenty of things that I've listened to, but have not read (including the Lord John books, for example).

And, I agree with Captivated that I wouldn't want to wait to read things first. Takes too much time. And, I only listen to unabridged versions. If I want to read (or listen to) a book then I want to experience the whole thing. Abridged versions just seem wrong somehow.

LOL Captivated ""...his firm muscled chest..." really creeped me out!" :rotfl:

I know I was previewing some male narrators and felt the same.

I agree I just started listening to audio books and I started using my dusty treadmill again. Audible.com had a tv offer which was sign up for 1 month get 2 books free so I made 2 accounts and got the first 4 books free (well $14 for the month really so 2 for
$14) the next 2 I got the on ioffer.com at $3.99 each the seller emails them to you and you save to your comp and pass to your ipod/mp3/kindle I put mine on my kindle.

audiobooklover I totally agree I will not listen to an Abridged audio book I want the whole thing.
I have not gotten to the last books yet (read or listened) I read the first 4 and in the middle of TFC I decided I would listen to book 5 cause it was kinda of slow and I would get thru it faster but I enjoyed it so much I put it down and started listening from the beginning now I'm in the beginning of book 4 audio book so I guess once I get to the next ones that I have not read I can see if I really like it as much.

I hope I do so I can keep working out if that will be the new excuse :rotfl:

I'd recommend almost anything read by Rosalyn Landor, Phil Gigante or Natalie Ross. Phil and Natalie narrate the last two Fever books together (I think they're married) and he also does all Moning's Highlander books. I'm an avid runner and love to listen to audio books when I'm not in the mood for music on my runs.

I thought there must be a thread here somewhere for this question  Unfortunately I don't know narrators so much as the book they narrate. (with the exception of Jim Dale and Davina Porter).

So my question is slightly different. What are your favorite audiobooks?

My favorite, after Outlander and Harry Potter, is probably Time Traveler's Wife. Male and female narrators, very well done with a great story.

Two other great listens are The Testament by John Grisham (a story of greed and redemption), and Envy by Sandra Brown (a romance with complex characters and a complex storyline that sucks you in. One of her best, much more than a romance.)
